The Ophthalmology Museum of China (OMC) is an integrated museum sponsored by the Chinese Ophthalmological Society and the Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University. The museum is located inside the Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University in Nantong city, Jiangsu province and offer free admission to the public. OMC is the only professional museum in China with characteristic of the preservation of the Chinese history of ophthalmology and its unique contributions to science and health. Today, the Museum has collected more than 1000 items including cultural relics, ophthalmic devices, instruments, archives and rare books. The exhibits contain the ophthalmological art and cultural heritage from both ancient and modern China, which reflect the fruits of Chinese ophthalmological civilization, .. Among the collection, several very precious items should be highlighted, such as couching instruments for Chairman Mao Zedong, extracapsular and intracapsular cataract extraction devices, phacoemulsification instruments, Shen Shi Yao Han (a precious acient book of ophthalmology published in 1853), Yin Hai Jing Wei (published in Qing Dynasty), Chinese Journal of Ophthalmology (collection from 1951 to the present), spectacles in The Ming and Qing Dynasty and Ophthalmoscope from19th century. To support the public cultural services and satisfy people’s learning needs, we strive to promote the historical and cultural knowledge of the general public - to the young people in particular. We fulfill this purpose by making the OMC a classroom for life-long learning. Through our perpetual effort, we can gradually build an establishment commensurate with Chinese ophthalmological history, research, public education, and the growing spiritual and cultural needs of the people. OMC has gained an opportunity to develop a long-term plan. The plan included the extension of the exhibition area to more than 2,500 square meters. At that time, museum will have more than 20 sections. We will have Chinese ophthalmology rejuvenation exhibitions on regular display and more than a dozen categories of display related to special exhibitions and international exchange. OMC enlargement project is underway and will be completed in 2015. At that time, the museum will cover more than 2,500 square meters and consist of three major sections: the history on the development of ophthalmology in China, exhibition of collections and relics, and eye health education. We hold leading within China, first-class externally as our main objective, people foremost as a principle of development, honest to reality, close to life, friendly to the people as a value, and talent, collection, services and academics as the key points in running the museum. It is of great importance to preserve, inherit, display, and develop the magnificent Chinese ophthalmology culture. We believe, when you stroll through the long road of history and art, you will marvel at the splendor of 5,000 years of Chinese Ophthalmology, admire the spirit of Chinese ophthalmologists, and be immersed in the beauty of art. You will certainly enjoy your journey at the OMC! Welcome to the Ophthalmology Museum of China (OMC). |
